Blüthner soundboard work…

Such a long time since I added anything new to my website! Here’s the piano I’m currently working on. The soundboard was in rather a sorry state, and I’ve done a number of repairs to it. Seen here, just after trimming the new shims, and just before scraping the old finish away ready for sanding and lacquering.

I like the rather “snaily” shaving taken from one of the shims…!

Bass bridge…

Bass bridge on the Style-X has now been drilled. Next job will be to apply coats of black lead (to help the strings slide over the top of the bridge when the piano is tuned), carve the notches, and fit new bridge pins.

Varnished soundboard…

Underside of the Style-X soundboard has been varnished – next job is to glue the board into the case. The wooden buttons in the picture are there to spread the load from the screws helping to hold the bridges onto the board.

Busy workshop…

Soundboard shaped to fit the case, and bridges positioned, and rough bearing set. Just about to glue the bridges on, then start varnishing the underside of the board. Tomorrow the board will be glued into the case.

“X” soundboard…

The new soundboard (also known as the “belly”) for the Style-X Blüthner. Seen here in the process of being fitted to the case – it arrives slightly oversized, and is then trimmed all round to fit snuggly to the shape of the piano.

Soundboard day…

The new soundboard arrives at 12 noon! The case is all prepared – the bracings have been cleaned and lacquered, the slips (the area that the soundboard is glued to) cleaned, and the new polyester wrapped up for protection during the work.

Todays work will mainly involve fitting the board to the case – tomorrow the bridges (three of them on this piano) will be positioned, bearing set etc. Last job of the day will be varnishing the underside of the board ready for it to be glued into the case the next day.

New bass bridge…

New maple bass bridge blank completed, seen here next to the old bridge on the bandsaw. Notice the new bridge is a few millimetres taller than the old one – this is to give me some material to play with when setting up the bearing a little later in the rebuild.

Bellyhead…

Detail shot of the “bellyhead” on Blüthner No.83988. A rather interesting meeting of spruce, oak, beech, and maple.
